Series 1: 2018
Health Promotion Canada partnered with the National Collaborating Centre for Determinants of Health (NCCDH) to deliver 5 webinars (4 in English, 1 in French) based on several chapters in the newly revised Health Promotion in Canada text book (4th edition).
The goal was to explore how various themes in this book apply to public health action on health equity by pairing the authors’ content with practitioner perspective on application to public health practice.

Health-in-all policies as a health promotion strategy
Date: October 23, 2018
Content: This webinar explored the concept of “health in all policies” (HiAP) and how it has come to be a health promotion strategy for public health action on health equity. Opportunities and challenges for implementing HiAP were discussed, as well as the importance of evaluating impact on the social determinants of health. Practice examples related to the implementation of HiAP were included, such as identifying the role for public health to advocate for this approach and participate actively.

Participatory practice and health promotion in Canada
Date: September 20, 2018
Content: This webinar explored participatory health promotion practice as an approach to action on health equity. The presenters reviewed the concept of engagement as a reflection of philosophy, goals and values. In addition, strategies for creating the space for practice to change were discussed, such as listening to stories, respectful dialogue and critical reflexivity. A segment on the challenges of participatory practice and opportunities to overcome them through practice scenarios was also included.

Promising practices in Indigenous community health promotion
Date: July 24, 2018
Content: This webinar explored what it means to be an ally at an organizational and systems level for Indigenous peoples and communities. The importance of Indigenous community engagement to the pursuit of health equity was discussed, stressing the role that all practitioners have to play across geographies. Steps to engage with Indigenous communities in a meaningful way were explored, including how to develop relationships where none previously existed. Examples of Indigenous community engagement strategies were also highlighted.

Contrasting entry points for intervention in health promotion practice

Content: Health promotion practice has traditionally consisted of three main entry points: issues/risk factors, population groups and settings. This webinar explores the three main entry points, as well as the impact of social context on health promotion interventions. The presenters share practice-based examples that address this topic in relation to public health planning and policy development in the pursuit of health equity.

Différences dans les points d’entrée pour les interventions dans le domaine de la promotion de la santé

Contenu: Ce webinaire a exploré les trois grands points d’entrée du domaine de la promotion de la santé (les problèmes et les facteurs de risque, les groupes de population et les milieux de vie), ainsi que l’influence du contexte social sur les interventions de promotion de la santé. Les présentatrices ont partagé des exemples d’interventions ayant de différents points d’entrée afin de discuter plus concrètement du processus de planification et d’élaboration des politiques publiques pour promouvoir l’équité en santé.
